I get asked this by contractors in Vista, San Marcos, Escondido and Carlsbad about once a week. The honest answer depends on how fast you need to see movement and how much of the work you want to babysit.

What should a North County contractor look for in an SEO agency?

Look for three things: proof on a live site in your trade, reporting that separates brand searches from non-brand searches, and a clear list of who does the work each week. A good North County SEO partner shows you named client results with dates, publishes on a steady schedule, and handles your Google Business Profile as well as your website. If a pitch cannot name a client and a number, keep looking.

Agency vs freelancer vs automated system

Here is how the three options compare for a home service business with one or two trucks.

FactorTraditional agencyFreelancerAutomated system with human review
Publishing paceMonthly batchesDepends on their other clientsWeekly, on a fixed schedule
Local knowledgeOften a national teamVaries widelyBuilt from local search data
Single point of failureAccount manager turnoverOne person's calendarProcess keeps running
GBP handlingUsually an add-onRarely offeredPart of the same workflow
ReportingBlended metrics commonInconsistentMeasured positions by city

None of these is wrong for everyone. A great freelancer beats a mediocre agency every time.

What results can you realistically expect?

Mr Green Turf Clean, a Poway company serving North County, went from 0 to 451+ search impressions and reached #1 for 'turf cleaning san diego'. It also picked up 130+ GBP impressions from a standing start. Integrity Pro Washers logged 167 search impressions in month one and 81 GBP impressions.

That is not a guarantee. Impressions come first, then clicks, then calls, and the gap between them can be months.

A problem we hit on our own site

We rank for plenty of North County phrases and still get almost no clicks. Our GSC data shows 4,746 impressions and 5 clicks over 14 days at an average position of 24. Most of our terms sit on page 2, which is why we are rewriting titles on our Oceanside and Carlsbad pages first. We would rather show you that than hide it.

How do you vet the agency you are about to hire?

Ask for their own rankings. An SEO company that cannot rank its own city page tells you something. Then read our guide to vetting an SEO agency, check the results page, and compare it with how we describe the process on how it works.

Pricing is on the services page. If you want your current site graded against these points, the free audit is at our contact page.
