What does SEO for contractors mean as a search term versus a service?
"SEO for contractors" gets roughly 2,900 searches a month nationally with a keyword difficulty of 3, which is about as low as competitive difficulty gets for a phrase with real volume. "Contractor SEO san diego" currently shows zero impressions in our own Search Console, even though we rank for the closely related "SEO for home service businesses san diego" at position 10.4 with 14 impressions, and "local SEO for contractors san diego" at position 11.3. Google treats these as distinct enough that ranking for one doesn't carry over to the other. That's the gap this post exists to close.
Why we're telling you this instead of hiding it
Most agencies won't show you a keyword where they're not ranking. We track this stuff in Ahrefs and Search Console the same way we track it for clients, and the honest answer is we're mid-build on this exact term. It's a fair test case for anyone deciding whether to trust our numbers on their own site, since Mr Green Turf Clean and Integrity Pro Washers both started at zero impressions too.
What actually moved those two accounts
Mr Green went from 0 to 451+ search impressions and took the #1 spot for "turf cleaning san diego," plus 130+ GBP impressions from a cold profile. That's a Poway-based company serving North County. Integrity Pro, working the North Park area, hit 167 search impressions and 81 GBP impressions in month one, alongside a site speed fix that dropped LCP from 18.1 seconds to 8.9 seconds. Neither result came from ad spend. Both came from the same content and technical system we run for every client.
How long before a contractor site ranks for its category term?
Broad category terms like "contractor SEO san diego" take longer than city-specific long-tail terms, usually 60-120 days versus 30-45 for a tightly scoped city page. The keyword difficulty being low helps, but low difficulty doesn't mean zero competition, it means the competition is beatable with consistent content rather than years of domain authority.
What we're doing differently this round
Publishing this post is step one. Step two is a page_edit pass on our existing service pages to add contractor-specific language where it's currently generic. Step three is watching Search Console weekly instead of monthly, since our current 14-day GSC window shows 6,092 impressions across our target list at an average position of 28.0, which means most of our own rankings are still building, not established.
If you're a contractor in San Diego County watching this same problem happen on your own site, our free SEO audit will show you exactly which of your terms sit in this same zero-impression gap. Full pricing and what's included is on the services page, and the underlying system is explained in detail on how it works.
