The Checklist, Before Anything Else
Last updated: June 2, 2026
A new search trend pulled my attention this week. "Local SEO for home service businesses in San Diego" is rising. I built the checklist below over the last 14 months running engines for plumbers, pressure washers, turf cleaners, and landscape contractors across San Diego County. It is the same sequence I walked through with Mr Green Turf Clean in Poway and Integrity Pro Washers in North Park. Mr Green went from 0 to 451 search impressions and ranked #1 for "turf cleaning san diego." Integrity Pro hit 167 search impressions in month one with 81 GBP impressions. The order matters more than the items.
What Should Be on a Local SEO Checklist for a San Diego Home Service Business?
Run these in order. Verify and fix your Google Business Profile category, service areas, and address. Pull a baseline from Google Search Console and GBP Insights so you can measure what changes. Audit your site's Largest Contentful Paint, mobile usability, and crawlability. Build a single page per service and per neighborhood you actually work in. Set a weekly cadence for GBP posts and photos. Earn reviews from real customers with a follow-up text after every closed job. That is the order. Skip step one and the rest of the work compounds slower.
Step 1: Fix the Google Business Profile Before You Touch the Website
Every contractor I onboard has a GBP problem they do not know about. Wrong primary category. Service area pin set to the wrong city. Hours that contradict the website. I had a Encinitas client whose primary category was "Contractor" instead of "Landscaping Service." That single category change moved their map pack visibility within 11 days.
Arcadian Landscape is a fresh example. Their profile got suspended on May 19, 2026. We pulled their CSLB license record, an ACORD 25 certificate of insurance, and their IRS CP-575 EIN letter into one document package. Reinstated under 24 hours after submission on May 21. If GBP is wrong, nothing else matters yet.
Step 2: Measure Before You Optimize
I will not start work without a baseline. For Integrity Pro Washers, the first thing I logged was their LCP. It was 18.1 seconds on mobile. After image compression, lazy loading on the gallery, and removing two render blocking scripts, we hit 8.9 seconds. That single metric drove the impression growth more than any keyword work in month one.
Write these numbers down before you do anything else:
- GSC impressions, clicks, and average position for the last 28 days
- GBP impressions, direction requests, calls, and website clicks for 28 days
- Core Web Vitals from PageSpeed Insights on three real service pages
- Current ranking for your three biggest money keywords
Step 3: Build One Page Per Service and Per Real Neighborhood
One page per zip code does not work. One page per real service area does. Mr Green serves Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Mountain Ranch, and Scripps Ranch. Four pages. Each one mentions the actual streets and corridors the crew drives. Not generic city pages with the city name swapped.

How Does an Automated SEO Engine Compare to a Manual Agency?
| Task | Manual Agency | Echo Engine |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly GBP posts | 4 to 8 | 20 plus |
| Page speed audits | Quarterly | Weekly |
| New neighborhood pages | 1 per month | 1 per week |
| Review request cadence | Ad hoc | After every closed job |
| Reporting | Monthly PDF | Live dashboard |
What I Skip on Purpose
No spammy citation packages. No chasing domain authority scores. No 3000 word blog posts targeting keywords with zero commercial intent. The checklist is short on purpose. Short and run weekly beats long and run once.
How Long Until Any of This Shows Up in the Data?
Mr Green saw the first impression jump in week three. Integrity Pro hit measurable GBP impressions inside 14 days because their location had no prior history to overcome. Arcadian's reinstatement work was 48 hours. Real local SEO compounds. Most contractors I talk to expected week one results and quit at month two. That is the gap I am trying to close.
What This Costs in Time
If you run this yourself, plan on 6 to 10 hours in week one for GBP cleanup and baseline measurement. Then 90 minutes a week for posts, photos, and reviews. The page speed audit and neighborhood pages are 4 to 6 hours each if you write them yourself. Most contractors I meet do not have those hours, which is why we built the engine.
If you run a home service business in San Diego County and want the same checklist run on your shop, the how it works page walks through what we build. The contact page has the audit form.
