Why does Google Search Console show a different ranking than a rank tracker?

Search Console reports one average position across every city, device and day, and hides queries with very few impressions. A rank tracker checks the results page from a named city on a named day. The two numbers answer different questions. Search Console tells you how your pages performed overall, while a city-level check tells you what a customer in that city saw. For a contractor serving one region, the city check is the closer match to real calls.

Our own numbers, side by side

Take local seo oceanside. Search Console averages it at 7.6 across 77 impressions. An Ahrefs check from Oceanside on 2026-10-26 puts it at #4.

Same keyword. Same week. Different answers, both correct.

The gaps run in both directions. Oceanside seo is slightly worse in the city check than in the Search Console average, so the city check is not simply a flattering number.

Brand terms inflate everything

Of 29 keywords we track, 15 sit in the top 100. Five non-brand terms are in the top 10 and only one is in the top 3. Echo Local brand searches rank #1 and #2 and I leave them out of every success count, because they rank no matter what work gets done.

Blend them in and a flat month looks healthy. It was not flat or healthy. We have 4 clicks from 6,581 impressions.

What rank trackers cannot see

A city-level rank check reads the standard results. It cannot show whether a business appears in the map pack. If a results page contains a local pack, that only tells you one exists, not that you are in it.

That is what local ranking grids are for, and it is why we treat map pack visibility as a separate measurement from organic position. We do not claim map pack presence from organic data.

How we use both

Search Console finds the pages that are moving and the queries we did not think to track. City checks decide whether a page edit worked where it counts. Our system runs both and flags the disagreements for review, which is part of what we describe on the how it works page.
