A concrete contractor in Vista called us in June with the same sentence we hear most: "Google says I got 900 views last month and my phone did not ring once." He had the Insights screenshot open. The views were real. The calls were not.
Why does a Google Business Profile get impressions but no calls?
A profile earns impressions when Google decides you are close enough and roughly relevant. Calls come from different signals: exact primary category, written service descriptions, recent job photos, review text, and a landing page that loads fast. Impressions without calls usually means you are showing for browse searches, not hire searches.
Most contractor profiles we open were set up once and then left alone. The category is close but not exact. Two photos, both off a phone camera roll, both a year old. A service list that says "Pressure Washing" with nothing written under it.
The profile still collects impressions. Google has to show somebody to the person standing two miles away on El Camino Real with their thumb on the screen.
Impressions are cheap. Calls are not.
A browse search and a hire search are not the same query
| What they typed | What Google is testing | What actually gets the call |
|---|---|---|
| seo company near me | Proximity and primary category | Photo count, review count, open hours |
| local seo services in oceanside | Category plus city relevance | Service descriptions and a landing page that matches the city |
| why is my business not showing on google | Content relevance, proximity barely matters | A page that answers the question in plain words |
That third row is the one contractors miss. It is also the row AI answers pull from, because there is no map pack to hide behind.
How important is Google Business Profile for contractor SEO?
For a service area business it is the heaviest single asset you own, and it is the one you can fix this week without touching code.
It is still not a substitute for a site. The profile decides whether you get shown. The site decides whether the click turns into a call. A slow site burns the click you just earned. One washing client came to us with a largest contentful paint of 18.1 seconds on a phone. After the rebuild it was 8.9 seconds, and the profile produced 167 search impressions in the first month with the phone number finally getting tapped.
What moves a profile from impressions to calls
- Set the primary category to the exact thing you are, not the thing you also do. One primary. Google says pick the fewest categories that apply, and it means it.
- Write a real description under every service you list. Blank service names are dead weight in the index.
- Get past 10 photos. Job photos with the work visible, not a logo and a truck. One photo reads as abandoned.
- Ask for review text, not stars. Google parses the words. A review that says "soft washed the stucco on our Fire Mountain house" does more than four anonymous five star ratings.
- Point the profile at a page about that city, not the homepage. Oceanside traffic should land on an Oceanside page. Carlsbad and San Marcos get their own.
- Post weekly. Three short posts a week is enough to look like an operating business.
What does this cost?
Our base package is $447 a month and it covers the profile work above, review generation and replies, citations and directory listings, technical SEO, and AI search readiness. The advanced package is $897 a month, which is base plus ongoing link building. Managed Google Ads is $197 a month plus whatever ad spend you pay Google directly. A website build is quoted separately because no two are the same.
We will not tell you what position you will hold or when. We have moved a client from page 2 to 3 up to the number 1 spot on a city keyword, verified in Search Console. That happened. It is not a promise about your profile.
The Vista concrete guy had his primary category set to "contractor" and eleven services listed with no descriptions. That is a Tuesday afternoon of work, not a contract. If your profile has been up a year and the call log is empty, start there.
More on the profile side of this is on the Google Business Profile help page, and the published numbers are on the results page.
