Do Google Business Profile photos affect local ranking?
Google has never published photos as a confirmed ranking factor, so nobody outside Google can prove a direct effect. What we can say from running profiles is that photos change how people respond to a listing, and response is what leads to calls. A profile with real, recent photos of finished work gives a homeowner a reason to tap. A profile with a stock logo and nothing else gives them a reason to scroll past. Treat photos as a conversion tool first and a possible ranking help second.
What we saw on our own client profiles
Mr Green Turf Clean reached 130+ GBP impressions from zero. Integrity Pro Washers logged 81 in its first month. Both profiles got photos of real jobs early.
But I cannot separate the photos from everything else we changed at the same time: categories, service areas, descriptions. Anyone who tells you photos alone caused a jump is guessing.
That is the honest limit of the data. We changed several things together, so we credit the package, not one piece.
Which photos are worth uploading?
Photos of actual work, taken on a phone, in the neighborhoods you serve. A before and after of a turf cleaning in Poway beats a polished stock image every time.
Skip anything with a visible house number or a customer's face unless they agreed. Skip heavy filters too.
A simple upload routine
- Take three photos at every finished job: wide shot, close detail, and before if you have it.
- Upload them within a week, while the work is still recent.
- Rename files with the service and city before uploading, such as turf-cleaning-poway.
- Add your truck, team and equipment once, then leave them alone.
Where photos fail
The common mistake is a burst of fifty photos in one afternoon and nothing for six months. A steady trickle looks like a working business. A dump looks like a one-time cleanup.
Another problem: uploading photos to a profile that has the wrong primary category. The photos will not fix that. Our post on impressions without calls covers the category check.
Photos, posts and reviews work together
We cover the posting side in GBP photos and posts and the review side in review velocity. If you want us to run the whole profile, see our GBP help page.
