What is review velocity and why does it affect local rankings?
Review velocity is the rate at which new Google reviews land on a profile, not the total count. A business with 40 reviews collected over three years signals something different to Google than one with 40 reviews collected in the last 90 days. Google's local ranking factors weight recency and consistency, so a steady drip of new reviews, roughly 3-6 per month for most home service categories we manage, tends to outperform a profile that got 20 reviews in one push and then went quiet for a year.
Why a review burst can hurt more than it helps
We've seen contractors ask every customer for a review the same week, usually after a slow month made them nervous. Twenty reviews land in five days. It looks great for about a week. Then Google's spam detection flags the pattern, and in a few cases we've traced, it triggers a manual review of the profile itself.
That's not a hypothetical. Arcadian Landscape, an established Encinitas contractor we work with, had their GBP suspended on May 19, 2026. We reinstated it in under 24 hours using a CSLB license lookup, an ACORD 25 certificate of insurance, and an IRS CP-575 document package, but suspension recovery is a fire drill nobody wants to run twice. Slower, steadier review velocity is one of the simplest ways to avoid triggering that review in the first place.
The system we run instead
Automated review requests sent within 24-48 hours of job completion, timed so they don't all land the same day even if five jobs finished the same week. We stagger the send times. It's a small detail and it matters.
Manual Review Asks vs Automated Review Requests
| Factor | Manual Asks | Automated Requests |
|---|---|---|
| Consistency | Depends on staff remembering | Fires on every completed job |
| Timing spread | Often bunched after slow weeks | Staggered automatically |
| Typical velocity | Spiky, 0 to 15 in a week | Steady, 3-6 per month |
| Suspension risk pattern | Higher during bursts | Lower, more natural-looking |
How many reviews does a contractor actually need to rank?
There's no magic number. Mr Green Turf Clean generated 130+ GBP impressions from zero with a lean review base, mostly because the reviews arrived steadily alongside consistent posting and photo uploads. Volume matters less than most agencies claim. Consistency matters more.
We fold review velocity into the same system we use for photos and posting, covered in our GBP photos and posts breakdown. If your profile has already been suspended, read what actually worked for Arcadian in our suspension and reinstatement case study.
None of this is complicated. It's just tedious enough that most contractors don't do it consistently on their own, which is the entire reason this is a paid service on our services page.
