Service area settings look like a five-minute task. They are also one of the fields that gets contractor profiles flagged.
How should a contractor set service areas on Google Business Profile?
List only the cities and neighborhoods you can reach the same day, and keep the list short. Google allows up to 20 service areas per profile, but a tight list of your real territory reads as more credible than all of San Diego County. If you work from a home or yard and do not serve customers there, hide the address. If customers visit a real shop, show it. Match the profile to your license and insurance records.
Why do service areas matter for suspensions?
Mismatches are what trigger reviews. Arcadian Landscape, an established Encinitas contractor, had its profile suspended on May 19, 2026. We got it reinstated on May 21, in under 24 hours, with a CSLB license lookup, an ACORD 25 certificate of insurance and an IRS CP-575 letter.
The documents matched the business name and location on the profile. That match is the whole job.
What we check before touching a profile
Before I change any service area, I compare the name, address and category against the CSLB record. If they disagree, I fix the paperwork side first. Editing a live profile with mismatched records is how a small problem becomes a suspension.
Can a Poway or Vista business rank across North County?
Yes, with limits. Mr Green Turf Clean is based in Poway and serves North County. It reached 130+ GBP impressions from zero and #1 for 'turf cleaning san diego' in organic results. I cannot tell you its map pack position, because our rank tracker does not see the map pack, and I will not guess.
What I can say is that distance from your address still matters. A profile based in Poway will not beat a profile based in Oceanside for a search made in Oceanside.
What should you do this week?
Open your profile, read the service area list out loud, and delete anything you would not drive to for a 9 a.m. estimate. Then check whether the category is right, since a wrong category is the usual reason for impressions with no calls.
