How do you optimize a Google Business Profile for more calls?
Fix the primary category, set service areas to places you really work, write a plain description, add real job photos, and ask for reviews every week. Then check that the phone number, hours and website link are correct. The order matters because a wrong category wastes every step after it. Impressions are the first sign it is working, and calls follow only if the profile also looks trustworthy once someone sees it. Below is the sequence we use, and the problems we hit along the way.
The steps in the order we run them
- Confirm the profile is verified and not suspended.
- Set the primary category to the main service you want calls for.
- Add secondary categories only for services you truly sell.
- Set service areas to the cities you actually serve, not the whole county.
- Write a description in plain language, with no keyword lists.
- Upload real photos from recent jobs.
- Turn on a review request routine after every job.
- Post once a week about a real job.
What happened on two real profiles
Mr Green Turf Clean started with no GBP presence and reached 130+ impressions. Integrity Pro Washers recorded 81 impressions in month one. Those are modest numbers, and I report them because they are the real ones.
Impressions do not equal calls. We have seen profiles with plenty of views and no phone activity, and the cause was usually a mismatched category. We wrote up that fix in this post.
The mistake that costs the most
Service areas. Contractors in Encinitas often list all of San Diego County, which dilutes the profile and sometimes triggers review flags. Keep it to the North County cities you drive to. Our service area guide has the specifics.
When the profile gets suspended
It happens, usually after an edit that looks suspicious to Google's automated checks. Arcadian Landscape was suspended on 2026-05-19 and back by 2026-05-21 after we submitted a CSLB lookup, an ACORD 25 certificate of insurance and an IRS CP-575 letter. Having those documents ready is half the battle. The full story is in the reinstatement post.
Time and cost
A clean setup takes a few hours. Keeping it active is about thirty minutes a week. If you would rather hand it off, our GBP help page explains what we do, and services lists packages.
