What is SEO for home service businesses?

SEO for home service businesses is the work of making a plumber, HVAC company, landscaper or cleaner appear when nearby homeowners search for that service. It covers the Google Business Profile, dedicated service pages for each trade and city, page speed, and content that answers the questions people ask before they call. The goal is phone calls from your service area, not traffic from everywhere. Results usually show first as search impressions, then as clicks, then as calls.

Start with the profile, not the blog

Most owners want a blog first. I start with the Google Business Profile, because that is what a homeowner sees before they ever reach a website.

Primary category, service areas, hours, photos. Get them right. I have seen a profile with plenty of impressions and almost no calls because the category was wrong. Fixing it took ten minutes.

Mr Green Turf Clean is the example I use. The profile went from nothing to 130+ impressions on its own, alongside the website climbing from zero to 451+ search impressions.

Which pages does a service business actually need?

One page per service and one page per city you want to win. A pressure washer in North Park does not need a page for every suburb in the county. It needs a page for pressure washing, one for driveway cleaning, one for house washing, and a clear service area.

Integrity Pro Washers had 167 search impressions in month one after this kind of structure went live. Not calls yet, but the pages were being matched to searches.

Speed comes next, and it is rarely fast enough

I pulled the largest contentful paint on Integrity Pro from 18.1 seconds to 8.9 seconds. Better, still not good. Image sizes and third party scripts were the main cause, and both are fixable without a redesign.

Our own site audit scores 37 out of 100 today. Slow pages, long titles and broken links all show up. I list that here because I would rather you see a practitioner who tracks his own problems than one who hides them.

When does content start to matter?

After the first three steps. A blog post on a site with a wrong category and a ten second load time is wasted effort.

StepWhat it fixesTypical time
Profile cleanupMap visibility and call rateA few days
Service and city pagesMatching real searches2 to 4 weeks
Speed workBounce and rankings1 to 3 weeks
Ongoing contentLong tail and AI answersCompounds over months

Content then compounds. Each page that ranks gives the next one a better chance, and that is the part an automated system does better than a monthly retainer, because it keeps publishing when nobody is watching.

What does it cost and how long does it take?

Expect first impressions inside 30 days and real call volume in three to six months, depending on how much competition your trade has. I cover the timeline with real data in how long SEO takes for contractors, and the pricing detail on the services page.

If you run a trade in Oceanside, Vista, Escondido or anywhere nearby, the free audit shows which of these four steps is your weak one.
